Tiffany & Alex

Here is what was said by everyone (mostly Allison) during the ceremony:

Allison Howard

Welcome. We gather here today to celebrate the joining of Tiffany and Alex.  Allowing the bonds of family and friendship to support and reinforce their bond of marriage. We stand together to witness this commitment.

The connection to nature is an important one for Alex and Tiffany.  Their decision to make a lasting commitment to one another came at the beginning of a cross-country camping adventure.  Exactly one year and a day ago, standing in the wind at the edge of an ocean, an exchange of small stones sealed their engagement.  Now, they begin a new adventure.  Supporting them as they embark on this journey together are the power and magic of the elements.

As we stand here on the earth, under this ancient oak tree, listening to the rush of the waterfalls, watching the play of sunlight and feeling a gentle breeze on our faces, a Cherokee prayer weaves these tangibles into a marriage blessing.

“We honor Mother Earth, and ask for our union to be abundant and grow stronger through the seasons.  We honor fire, and ask that our relationship be warm and glowing with love in our hearts.  We honor wind, and ask that we sail through life safe and calm.  We honor water, to clean and soothe our marriage—that it may never thirst for love.”

Let the elements bestow their gifts and blessings upon this union and let us join them.

Happiness in marriage is not something that just happens. A good marriage must be created.
In the Art of Marriage, the little things are the big things.
It is never being too old to hold hands.
It is remembering to say 'I love you' at least once a day.
It is at no time taking the other for granted; the courtship should not end with the honeymoon, it should continue through
all the years.
It is having a mutual sense of values and common objectives.
It is standing together facing the world.
It is forming a circle of love that gathers in the whole family.
It is doing things for each other, not in the attitude of duty or sacrifice, but in the spirit of joy.
It is speaking words of appreciation and demonstrating gratitude in thoughtful ways.
It is not expecting the husband to wear a halo, or the wife to have wings of an angel.
It is not looking for perfection in each other.
It is cultivating flexibility, patience, understanding and a sense of humor. It is having the capacity to forgive and forget.
It is giving each other an atmosphere in which each can grow. It is finding room for the things of the spirit.
It is a common search for the good and the beautiful.
It is establishing a relationship in which the independence is equal, dependence is mutual and the obligation is reciprocal.
It is not only marrying the right partner, it is being the right partner.

Marriage is a promise, put forth in the vows.  Alex and Tiffany will now make that promise.

Alex's vows

It’s been quite an eventful path that’s led us to here. We’ve had so many adventures together. We’ve been to so many places together. We’ve seen the sun rise out of the ocean from the top of Mt. Cadillac off the coast of Maine. We’ve seen planets rise, and we’ve seen buildings fall. We saw all five visible planets from the top of the Empire State Building. And snowflakes on our mittens. And countless other views. But no view compares to this right now.

I’ve always said that one of the things I love about you is that you’re resourceful. But that sounds so practical, so factual. What I mean is, you make things possible. So many obstacles don’t exist for you. When others see a wall, you see a path. You bring the world within reach. With you, life opens up. It’s one of the greatest gifts that you have, you bring Possibility with you. And for that I thank you. You make me feel very excited about the future and all that can be done because of who you are.

I only hope that I can bring my gifts to you, that bring you as much joy. Our lives are an adventure, but we also know how to make a home together. And wherever our home finds us, I will love you with my eyes wide open, aware of all my twists and turns. I will love you with my arms wide open to embrace life with you. I will love you with my heart wide open for life to flow freely.

Today we continue our adventure. We step once again into unknown lands where maps are sketchy and signposts sometimes hidden. And I can’t wait. There’s no one I’d rather travel through life with. I choose you. I thank you for joining your life to mine in this way. You are a joy to me. I love you sweets.

Tiffany's vows

Thank you for joining your life to mine.

You have a vision I have never met before. You see the world with unique eyes. You hear with unique ears. You have taught me so much about living and love. It is amazing to see the world through your eyes.

I look forward to the joy we will find in each other's separate successes and the ones we will share together.

Today we set upon a path we have not walked on before, but we've got the right supplies.

I will love you, near or far. Whatever time zone we each are in.
I will cherish you and respect you.
Comfort you and encourage you.
And together we will live - freed and bound by our love.

You are my dream, my smile, my heart and my music. I love you.

And now, the signing of the marriage certificate.

(Meredith Kurtz and Howard Hill as witnesses)

Tiffany and Alex have chosen to exchange rings with a celtic patern. It's the same pattern as their engagement rings. These bands have been hand made in England, and arrived two days ago. This is the first time that either Alex or Tiffany has seen them.

With this ring, I give you my promise,
that from this day forward you shall never walk alone.
My heart will be your shelter, my arms will be your home.
We will walk together through life as partners and best friends.
I promise that I shall always do my best
to love and accept you exactly as you are.
With this ring, I give you your freedom and my trust in you.
I give you my heart, I have no greater gift to give.

By the power vested in me by these two people, I now pronounce you wife and husband.

You may seal this union with a kiss.

As they join their lives, Tiffany Kurtz and Alex Hill have chosen to also join their names, becoming Alex and Tiffany Hillkurtz.  This allows them to keep alive their heritage and family traditions and at the same time create their own family and traditions.

I now present Mr. And Mrs. Hillkurtz!
